Whether or not you marry in Newport, it's a prime romantic destination for those with a love of the sea and America's history. Romance in this part of New England can be found on a sunset harbor schooner cruise, a Newport winery tour, or a stroll along Newport's breathtaking Ocean Drive or renowned Cliff Walk.

The Newport Cottages

Nearly everyone who visits Newport takes time to tour its magnificent "cottages," which were once the summer homes of America's wealthiest families. Most of the 19th-century Newport mansions stretch along Bellevue Avenue and are open to the public. The Preservation Society of Newport County offers guided tours of the properties that are limited to twenty persons in the larger Newport houses and ten to fifteen persons in the smaller ones. Tours are forty-five to fifty minutes in length and leave approximately every 10-15 minutes during the season.

The grandest of Newport's cottages, The Breakers was built by the Vanderbilt family in the style of an Italian palazzo. At the Astors' Beechwood Mansion, actors playing the part of family members and servants take you through the oceanfront property and even into the Newport servant's quarters. And you'll learn where the expression "dressed like Lady Astor's pet horse" came from. By the way, this extraordinary Newport property can be rented out for weddings.

Other Attractions

Immaculate beaches, historic neighborhoods, bustling wharves, and a scenic waterfront welcome visitors to Newport.
