The Bottom Line

Great companion for couples traveling to places where TV reception or local entertainment is iffy. Battery life is long enough to view two features, and there are dual headphone outputs.
Pros
  • Very good picture quality
  • Decent (5 hours) battery life
  • Simple to operate
Cons
  • Three-pound unit is still heavy to tote
  • Only accepts expensive Toshiba adaptor
  • Sound quality is so-so.

Description

  • A sturdy little portable DVD player in red-and-gray rubberized cabinet. Comes with remote control.
  • Picture quality is surprisingly good on this 7" widescreen unit with 480 x 234 pixel resolution.
  • I still can't figure out the controls on my home DVD player, but the SD-P1200 is easy to operate.
  • Unit plays CDs, CDRs, CDRW discs, and MP3 CDs as well as DVDs.
  • List price is $599.99. Amazon.com recently offered the unit for $429.84.
  • If you're flying a lot, invest in a Toshiba cigarette-lighter adaptor and/or extra battery ($100).

Guide Review - Traveling with a Portable Toshiba DVD Player

Alone on a long flight to Europe, I thought Toshiba's SD-P1200 would be my salvation. I deliberately had chosen a seat on a Boeing 777 equipped with a cigarette-style DC power outlet in order to watch movies on this unit all night. Alas, that was not to be: Only Toshiba's proprietary and costly ($80-100) MEDC12 Car and Airplane Cord Adapter will work with this model -- and I lacked one. So I read and dozed and saved the juice. Smart move: Later I was jet-lagged and wide awake in a London hotel that only carried channels for BBC, CNN, French and German sports, and a ghastly Italian variety show. While England slept, I flicked on the SD-P1200 and watched the movie Frida. Thank you, actress/producer Salma Hayak -- and thank you, Toshiba.
