Skytop Lodge
A Different Kind of Poconos Honeymoon

Perched on a scenic hill, 5,500-acre Skytop Lodge is a four-seasons resort that offers a range of activities for truly active honeymooners. The main building of Skytop Lodge is a gracious fieldstone structure built more than 60 years ago--and not much has changed. Skytop Lodge still has the atmosphere of a private club, where families return generation after generation. And vacationing at Skytop Lodge might become the start of a family tradition for you, too.

If you're expecting one of those heart-shaped beds or Jacuzzis-in-a-champagne-glass, this is not the place for you. That's the traditional Poconos honeymoon. But be warned that such places enjoyed their heyday some 50 years ago.

At Skytop Lodge rooms are on the small side, but with none of that kitschy decor. TV junkies will be disappointed; although you'll be equipped with a VCR, the TV itself is miniscule. All the more reason to go outside at Skytop Lodge.

We went in winter, and had a choice of skiing, tobogganing, ice skating, sledding, and swimming in the indoor heated pool. In spring, Skytop Lodge is a beautiful place to wander (they'll even pack you a box lunch for picnicking), and I hear the trout fishing is fine.

Skytop Lodge has three private lakes, an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and an 18-hole golf course. Every day there's a daily schedule of events you can participate in... or not.

Meals are served at Skytop Lodge in a spacious, elegant, and well-lit dining room, where you're assigned a table for the duration of your stay. Depending on the time of year you visit Skytop Lodge, men may be required to wear a jacket at dinner. Continental cuisine is well prepared, and desserts are creative and tasty.

If you get hungry in between regular dining room hours, visit the Skytop Lodge Tea Room. There's a small menu plus ice cream treats from an old-fashioned fountain. Here you can also rent fairly current videos, snarf junk food, buy a book or magazine, and buy the sundries you forgot to pack.

Off-site, there are a number of antiques stores in the general area around Skytop Lodge, perfect for feathering your nest. In nearby Tannersville, shoppers can find some bargains at The Crossings outlet mall.

Since Skytop Lodge is more of a family resort than a honeymoon one, be advised that there are plenty of kids here... but they're so well-behaved, you may be lulled into starting your own family right away.
