While there are many destinations that can fuel this fantasy, Boca Raton does a thoroughly convincing job. Located on South Florida's Gold Coast, on the map it's right below Palm Beach (where that old money smell can be a bit strong) and a tier above casual Fort Lauderdale. The wide Atlantic laps at one side of the city, the gentle Intracoastal the other.
Clean and pretty, with a warm and sunshiny climate, Boca Raton offers ample diversions and local attractions. There are beachfront parks where you can soak up the sun or participate in watersports, 35 golf courses, and Mizner Park, where you can shop, dine, or simply stroll. For a laugh, visit Boca's International Museum of Cartoon Art.
Evenings, a secluded spot on the beach may suit your desires. Or perhaps catch a stellar act at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
WHERE TO STAY IN BOCA RATON
While Boca Raton offers plenty of choices, for my money there's only one: The Boca Raton Resort & Club, the pink palace originally built by eccentric architect Addison Mizner in 1926.
Today the Boca Raton Resort & Club has three parts: Mizner's original Cloister (a Spanish- Moorish- Mediterranean- Gothic fantasy), the Tower (a 26-story high-rise with panoramic views of the Intracoastal, Atlantic, and golf greens), and the Boca Beach Club (defining casual elegance on a half-mile of private beach).
Because it has such excellent sports facilities, it's a place where well-heeled travelers go just for a golf vacation, or just a tennis vacation, a spa vacation, or just a Florida beach vacation...but you can do it all.
