SCENIC DRIVE #10: Hawaii/Hana Highway in Maui
If you travel all the way to Maui, go the distance and take the scenic drive to Hana on the eastern end of the island. Winding Hana Highway is likely to be the slowest (about three hours) -- and most magical -- 52 miles you will ever drive.

You'll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle (Maui car rental agencies stock them) to get there in safety and comfort. Serpentine Hana Highway traverses some 600 curves and dozens of bridges. And around each bend, the scenery delights and surprises.
On this enchanting part of Maui, fern-edged waterfalls beckon you to pull over and take a swim. Hana Highway also crosses farmland, passes cows lazing in velvety green pastures, rolling meadows, tropical forests, and fruit trees ripe with guava and bananas. Wild ginger scents the air, and the turquoise ocean extends as far as the eye can see.
