Is it too much to ask for a stretch of clean sand, warm turquoise water, endless blue skies, and a uniquely romantic place to stay on your honeymoon or next getaway?

The people who built Daniel's Head Village in Bermuda didn't think so. An environmentally sensitive resort located on a secluded peninsula surrounded by water, intimate coves, and gentle beaches, this cottage colony offered memorable accommodations. It was designed for vacationers who appreciate the adventure of a tent -- as well as the comforts of a cottage.

Over the water on stilts or hugging the coast, the colony's 16' x 16' free-standing tent cottages were covered in canvas-like material, creating a close bond between guests and nature. Each had its own ocean view through large glass windows and wide French doors facing the sea. Instead of cots and sleeping bags, full-size beds were provided. Units also included a private bath and shower as well as an indoor living room and an outdoor veranda.

Tented cottages on stilts featured a floor window that allowed you to view tropical fish swimming below. (If you didn't see them immediately, throwing a few crackers in the water would quickly attract them.) Seagrass beds just beyond are home to native green turtles.

It was like snorkeling without getting wet!

In this eco-friendly environment, recreation was totally people-powered, with swimming, small sail boating, and sea kayaking and some ten different beaches to choose from. If you wanted to get wet, colorful reefs just offshore offered spots for protected snorkeling, and scuba divers can find shipwrecks nearby.

Alas, Daniel's Head Village is no more. It was only open for a short while, and could not attract enough visitors to remain in business after 9-11. But it sounds like it was a wonderful place, doesn't it?

Perhaps one day some visionary entrepreneurs will see fit to revive this special getaway for lovers.
