Now that many airlines charge for checked baggage, it's smarter than ever to have a carry-on bag that's big enough to hold your essential gear but small enough to fit within carry-on luggage size limits. I'm a big believer in rolling luggage and spinner suitcases (why lug when you can glide?) in a size you can bring onboard, and recommend these easy-rolling carry-on bags.
If you haven't yet purchased carry-on luggage or want to know if the one in your closet will be allowed onboard, see Major Airlines' Carry-on Luggage Size and Weight Limits -- but double-check with your airline to make sure they haven't changed the rules on you!
