This spring we visited Toronto, Canada, and cranes were everywhere, evidence of a huge building boom. Most construction is for condos, but luxury hotels are part of the city's vertical expansion. We were fortunate to spend a few nights at the lovely new Ritz Carlton, Toronto, around the corner from the iconic CN Tower.
Some say the building boom is due to Toronto's hope to host the Olympics; others say it's become a hub of movie-making, standing in for a generic city. Either way, visitors are the beneficiaries.
One hotel branded with the name of the developer Spy magazine affectionately termed "short-fingered vulgarian" is already open, and new Shangri-La and Four Seasons hotels are scheduled to debut soon.
