If you've never been to Mexico but have heard about the country's exceptional resorts, 6,000 miles of coastline, and dozens of World Heritage sites -- as well as the real crime and gang violence perpetrated in our south-of-the-border neighbor, you may have wondered, "Is Mexico Safe?" The answer is yes... and no. The U.S. Department of State issued its latest travel warning in February 2012.
While many northern towns close to the U.S./Mexico border are in the danger zone due to drug-gang activity, other areas -- particularly the most popular tourism regions in the southern part of the country -- report low crime. In fact, some 35,000 American citizens married in Mexico last year.
