I live in New York and just found out about TailoredTours.com, which offers self-guided NYC tours via e-mail for $3 each. The tours are PDF files that you can print out or use on a PDA. The itineraries include sightseeing, activities and restaurants. Wife and I did one last weekend in Central Park - had lunch at Boathouse Cafe, rented a rowboat, saw the Zoo and ended up down at The Pond. Check it out if you’re coming to New York - sure beats the tour bus!
